There's a lot to be said about timing. If you do things at the right time, you can get ahead of your competitors and others. Sometimes, that timing comes down to making the right connections. Some people are born with the know-how; they just have the wherewithal to pull it off. Other times, they have to study, learn, and implement.
One of the most important elements to having a successful business is planning. This includes knowing who your target market is, and what their wants and needs are. You must know why they need what you are selling. If you don't, then you're likely to fail. It's a numbers game out there. That's why I always recommend starting out by targeting someone already interested in your business.
If you know your target market, you have an easier time finding a product or service to sell. You also have a better understanding of what your competition is doing. This makes your task a lot easier. And since the internet is a rapidly growing global market, you can keep up with your competitors by using your common knowledge to outwit them.
- When thinking about promoting your business online, think local. While the internet has incredible global reach, there are still certain regions that you won't see many sales from. Promoting your business on localized social networks like Facebook, Twitter, etc., gives you the opportunity to reach thousands, if not millions, of your potential customers. Just make sure you're promoting your product in the right areas. Don't get wrapped up in a bunch of hype and start promoting all kinds of crap that doesn't work.
- Read everything you can get your hands on. Not only will this save you a lot of time, but it'll also keep you from getting scammed. There is so much information on the internet, that you can never really be too careful. But remember, there is always good information. Never believe everything you read online.
- Know your audience. This is very important. You can't write a marketing message for a group of 30-year-olds. Write for the group that your product caters to. Know your customer.
- Always tell your customer where you stand and what you offer. When people shop online, they want to know who you are, what you have, and how you can best serve them. Don't leave this key component out. If you do, you'll find it harder to convert leads into sales.
- Keep your prices realistic. Many people set their price was too low. They think that if they quote a price that sounds too good to be true, it just might be true. Keep a reasonable price range in mind when you're negotiating with a client.
- Be upfront about shipping and delivery times. Many customers have a very short attention span. If you're not willing to give room for extra fees, they'll move on to someone else.
- Be persistent. Persistence pays off. If you don't hear back in a reasonable amount of time, try calling back. Remember, the worst thing that you can do is give up. If you give up, you may lose a potential customer forever.
As you can see, there is no reason for you not to use these tips to grow your online business. Just remember that you are not writing your business proposal or sales letter. The company that you choose to work with is writing your sales letter for you. Keep the pressure on them. Make them prove their case for you.
